commonstate Flute Glass
Inspired by the classic champagne flute, this hand-formed glass extends its familiar silhouette into something more ambiguous. Its unconventional elongated body gradually destabilises its immediate function as a drinking vessel, returning it instead to the elemental idea of a container, one open to reinterpretation and imagination.
The design also carries a personal memory of the designer learning to play the recorder in primary school, practising simple notes on the walk home and imagining a performance beneath the light of a summer sunset. Translating this association between the champagne flute and the musical instrument, commonstate transforms an everyday object into a vessel for memory and possibility.
Handmade in high-borosilicate glass without the use of moulds, the Flute Glass series comprises three individual variations, each continuing commonstate’s experimental approach to material, function and craftsmanship.

About commonstate
commonstate is a research-oriented art and design studio working between Beijing and London. Its practice draws upon speculative visions of future anthropology and archaeology, reconsidering the everyday condition of objects while exploring the contemporaneity of materials and the non-verbal languages they carry. Through continual experimentation, the studio brings artisanal knowledge into contemporary public view and encourages interdisciplinary conversations that move across boundaries of time and space.
